Currently, there are Seven (7) Operational Zonal Centres namely;
1:Lake (Mwanza)
2:Northern (Moshi)
3:Western (Tabora)
4:Eastern (Tabora)
5:Southern (Mtwara)
6:Southern-Highland (Mbeya) and
7: Zanzibar

The plan is underway to start renovation of Central zone (Dodoma) Blood Transfusion Centre. These ZC serves hospitals in 3 to 4 regions around them.
The ZC started to implement safe blood activities in January 2006 by sensitizing the community to become voluntary non-remunerated repeating blood donors (VNRBD), to collect blood from low risk population of VNRBD, processing, storage and distribution of blood to hospitals. Data from July 2006 to June 2007 (one year period) NBTS collected over 67,000 units through its operational 4 zonal centres in collaboration with Tanzania Red Cross Society and Tanzania Peoples Defence Force.

NBTS has experienced dramatically increase of the number repeating blood donors between April – June 2007 to 20% from as low as less than 5% in 2006. The increase in number of repeating blood donors has gone in parallel with reduction in discard rate of blood due to TTIs namely Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Hepatitis B Virus (HBV), Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) and Syphilis.
